About

GlaxoSmithKline, known as GSK, is a global healthcare company based in Middlesex, England that focuses on pharmaceuticals, vaccines and consumer healthcare. The company focuses on three main priorities to help meet the needs of patients everywhere: innovation, performance and trust.

GSK has created life-changing medicines in respiratory, HIV, oncology and immuno-inflammation; vaccines for people of all ages and over-the-counter healthcare products.

History

GSK’s humble beginnings started in a London apothecary shop in 1715, called Plough Court pharmacy. It was founded by Silvanus Bevan, an apothecary who provided medical advice and medicinal products. The Plough Court pharmacy originally grew into Allen & Hanbury’s, a company which developed a preventative medicine for rickets and vitamin A deficiency. It was later acquired by Glaxo Laboratories Ltd. in 1958.

In 1963, Glaxo Laboratories developed a research team to focus on developing a treatment for asthma, with the first medication being released in 1969. Glaxo plc bought shares of Wellcome Foundation Ltd., becoming the worlds largest pharmaceutical company, Glaxo Welcome plc. In 2000, GlaxoWellcome and SmithKline Beecham merged, forming today’s GlaxoSmithKline. The company currently employs 100,000 and is a leading developer of pharmaceuticals, vaccines and consumer healthcare.

Products

  • Wellbutrin – Also known as Bupropion, is a medication used for the treatment of depression and as a smoking cessation aid. It is often used as an add-on medication when selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants are not having the desired effect. It can also be used on its own as an effective antidepressant.
  • Amoxil – Also known as amoxicillin, Amoxil is a penicillin-based antibiotic that fights infections caused by bacteria, such as tonsillitis, bronchitis, pneumonia and ear, nose and throat infections. It can also be used to treat stomach ulcers when paired with Biaxin, also known as clarithromycin.
  • Advair – a combination medication of fluticasone propionate and salmeterol xinafoate, is used to manage symptoms caused by asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Fluticasone is an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid that can decrease inflammation in the lungs, while salmeterol treats airway constriction. When used together these components help manage symptoms over long periods of time but do not serve as an emergency remedy.
